Centre for Revival of Pune's Arts, Crafts and Culture, Pune

Pune is known as the cultural and educational capital of Maharashtra. Like other cities Pune too has been defined by various communities who have settled in different places and prospered with opportunities it provided.

Some have lasted the test of the time while some have succumbed to ever changing socio-economic scenario. The artisan communities have slowly waned out owing to their dying craft which is poorly marketed and sold. Kumbharwada- a settlement of potters and Tambat Aali –a settlement of copper smiths are two significant such places which are moving into oblivion. To preserve them in their truest form, there is a need to revive and promote these as a better profession at commercial platform.

The Site is located in Pune at the ‘Dhobi’ Ghat area, adjacent to Shankar Sheth road connecting the entry hub of the City centre to the cantonment area (camp). The design problem will revitalize the ‘Dhobi’ Ghat area (Laundry) into a vibrant space for the city while addressing the concerns and needs of the original ‘Dhobi’ community. The design approach was to revive the old traditional art and craft by giving a new identity to the old art by a contemporary design which blends into the landscape. The design will welcome people through public Plazas and create an attraction though its free flowing spaces.
